Dimensions 4.5-Volt, D, C, AA, AAA, 9-Volt, SR41/AG3, SR44/AG13 cells An AA battery measures 51mm in length (50.1mm without the button terminal), 13.514.5mm in diameter, (1.970.56 inches). Traditional alkaline AA batteries have mass of roughly 23g (0.81 oz), Lithium AA batteries have mass around 15g (0.5oz), and rechargeable NiMH batteries have mass about 31g (1.1oz). Primary chemistry and capacity Primary (non-rechargeable) zinc-carbon (Leclanch cell) AA batteries have around 400900 milliamp-hours capacity, depending entirely on test conditions, duty cycle, and cut-off voltage selected. Zinc-chloride batteries of 1000 to 1500mAh are often sold as "long life" or "heavy duty". Alkaline batteries from 1700mAh to almost 3000mAh cost a little more, but last proportionally longer. Single-use (ie. non-rechargeable) lithium batteries are also available for high demand devices such as digital cameras, where their high cost is offset by longer running time between battery changes. As of 2008, the only 1.5V lithium AA called "Ultimate Lithium" is manufactured by Energizer, although AA-sized batteries with different nominal voltages are available from others. These should only be used in devices rated for the higher voltage. Rechargeable chemistry and capacity A solar-powered charger for rechargeable AA batteries Rechargeable Nickel-cadmium battery (NiCd or NiCad) AAs with a capacity of 500 to 1100mAh are available, cost increasing with capacity. Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) AAs are also available in various capacities ranging from 1300 to 2900mAh. Rechargeable batteries supply 1.2V; since this is lower than the voltage of non-rechargeable cells, there are problems powering some devices with these batteries. For example, a device may be designed to use 4 alkaline batteries in series, producing 6V, and may fail to operate satisfactorily with the reduced voltage of 4.8V produced by 4 NiMH batteries. Some devices include warnings prohibiting use with rechargeable batteries, while some devices are designed to tolerate the lower voltage. The older NiCd battery chemistry can supply a higher peak current than typical NiMHs, so NiCds are commonly used to power model cars or other relatively high-current-draw devices. New NiMH AAs designed for high current applications are beginning to become available. These use different construction and have lower capacity (typically 14001600mAh) than the highest capacity NiMH batteries (above 2500mAh). Rechargeable AA-sized batteries based on Li-ion chemistry have also been introduced. These batteries are rated at 3.6 volts and are incompatible with most AA-based devices. AA lithiums have a relatively low internal resistance that effectively provides very high current if shorted. Equipment designed to rely on a battery's internal resistance to limit current may not tolerate higher inrush current with lithium cells. Where space permits a pair of AA batteries can sometimes be replaced by a single disposable or rechargeable CR-V3 battery See also List of battery sizes AAA battery Battery holder Battery (electricity) Battery (vacuum tube) Battery recycling Battery nomenclature References ^ http://people.msoe.edu/~tritt/trips/rabbitseason.html shows a copy of the page from the primary reference, IEC60086-2.
